  1. Do Test for Wax or Sealer first. Get permission from homeowner first.
  2. Mix-up spray bottle with stripper and water mixture,  use small amount (a bead) on inconspicuous area of floor (that the homeowner agreed upon).
  3. Have dwell time of 10 minutes.
  4. Wipe away the stripper and water mixture, if there’s any remaining marks, foggy white color change, violet appearance, there is wax and/or sealer on the wood. If you put your paint scraper on it, you should be able to scrape off the wax. Boom! Your test says,  “Yes, there is Wax!”
  5. Stickiness means wax. Smoothness most often means no wax.

What to do if you’re in the middle of a job and your newly cleaned floor looks milky or streaky?

There is a high probability that you have some wax or some other acrylic on that floor. The biggest enemy to proper floor prep is a wax or acrylic product. Even if the homeowner swears up and down that they “Never” use Acrylic Wax. Its highly probable that you are dealing with a floor with wax or acrylic.

Use proper floor preparation for floors with Wax/Acrylic. Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Did you strip the floor? If Not, strip (or re-strip) the floor. Do it again.
  2. Let’s talk about your floor cleaning product. Is it neutral Ph? Do you know that for certain? Reclean the floor with Neutral Cleaner/Water mixture, Clean/PowerScrub and extract. Sometimes, you may be unaware that the cleaning product you are using is actually a higher Ph product that could/will interfere with future sealing and refinishing.
  3. Follow-up with wet microfiber mop with water.
  4. What about your neutralizing? Did you neutralize the floor BEFORE applying Granny’s or anything else? If Not, use a Neutral Cleaner/Water mixture, then extract. Note: You cannot add Grannys or any other product without thoroughly neutralizing the high-alkaline stripper.
  5. Did you dry the floor- bone dry for 20 minutes with fans? If not, put fans on it and dry thoroughly BEFORE you put Granny’s on it. Note: No product, including Granny’s should ever be applied to a damp or wet floor.
